This is the case […]. He was birthed into a somewhat wealthy family, and when he got older, he actually worked as an art dealer. He was a very religious man, and was a member of the protestant religion. By the time Gogh was a teenager, his family began to financially struggle, leading him to have to leave school and become an art dealer. He became fluent in many languages such as English, French, and German. When he was relocated to London, we grew to love the English culture, and visited many many art galleries. Although he fell in love with a woman, she did not love him back, and even denied his marriage proposal, causing him to have a mental breakdown. He was later fired from his job for influencing the customers to not buy the worthless artwork. He later taught at an all boys schools and hoped to be a minister one day.

After a year of studying for the entrance test, he was rejected. He tried once again to be a minister elsewhere, but once again was rejected and failed. Van Gogh endured delusions and psychotic episodes. Although he was in fact concerned about his mental health, that did not stop him from heavily drinking and not eating the way that he should. At times, he even ate paint. Believe it or not, he actually cut his own ear off with a razor. After a heated argument with a friend, the anger got the best of him and he cut his ear off. The next morning he was admitted to a hospital and was very weak from all of the blood that he had lost. After being released from the hospital, he turned to painting as stress reliever. When he could not deal with the depression any longer, he was once again admitted into a mental facility, where he would paint during the day and go to the hospital at night.

Over his career, he had several very well known painting. Some of those paintings include Potato Eaters, Self Portrait, and The Starry Night. Not being all, obviously, but those are just a few of his most famous artworks. The painting is a picture of five people setting around a table eating potatoes. He wanted it to seem as if they just had a different way of life than we do, and that they earned their food. He considered this painting his most successful piece of artwork. In the portrait, he is looking away and his reddish beard and hair are very noticable, along with his bluish green eyes. Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear remains one of the most popular and interesting self-portraits of Van Gogh created after the artist returned from the hospital because he cut off his ear.

The prominent bandage demonstrates the context of this event as an important one. The artist portrays himself being in the own studio; he wears a hat and overcoat. The facial expression is melancholy and motionless, although Van Gogh contemplated his position as a painter, and masterfully created this composition. He took a detached and quiet look at himself and greatly expressed a feeling of hope through the simplified drawing and bright colors. With Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear and Pipe, the artist has conveyed a message to his viewer not only because of his overwhelming depression and his physical suffering but also because of enormous anxiety, mental despair, and fear.

The bandaged ear, distorted eyes, and pallid face precisely reflect his unhealthy state and signal hopelessness. A remarkable feature of the painting is a unique facial composition including the powerless lips, morbid face, and soulless eyes. The burning pipe, flat and rough color use, and completely covered body with numerous layers of his clothes express anxious mentality and spiritual instability of Van Gogh. He seems to be in a need of security and protection. The self-portrait demonstrates remorse and extreme sorrow. Van Gogh painted this piece of art soon after he left the Saint-Paul Asylum in Saint-Remy; it shows how the artist continued to fight his demons during the internal crisis.

Public deservedly describes this work as the most powerful self-portrait in the world art history. This self-portrait is quite a courageous image of a person, who attempts to hold himself together while fighting with the inner fears. After long years of frequent bouts and painful anxiety due to his mental illness, Van Gogh died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound as it was recognized at the time. However, no gun was detected then. He was thirty-seven. Late artworks represent the Dutch artist at the height of his abilities, completely under control, aiming for grace and conciseness Hughes, Order art essay.

For example, don't just talk about the painters' different backgrounds. Ask yourself what's significant about that. Below we provide a couple samples of symbolism in the novel:. Another point to consider in your The Tell-Tale Heart essay is the analysis of the connection between time and heart. Time is compressed and stretched. It pulses as the heart. But time also symbolizes death and the killer acts as part of a watch. Thus, the heart in the novel symbolizes life, and, through time, it turns out to be a symbol of death. Typical academic articles are hard to read because of complex words and compound sentences. Poe uses many figures of speech like similes, personification, anaphora, and irony. Analyze how these figures help Poe to convey the main idea to the reader. There are four characters you might want to explore in your character analysis: the narrator, police officers, the old man, and the neighbor.

All of them play an important role in the plot. There are also a few signs that he rarely sleeps. You can analyze how his insomnia might impacted his actions and desire to kill. The old man remains mysterious to the readers. It makes the whole story have plot twist after plot twist. The reason for such psychosis is because the narrator lets it completely take over, to a point where he […]. Sickness should not be taken lightly, but acted on quickly. To first start off, the main character , the narrator recounts his murder of an old man in an effort to prove his sanity, but in reality it is schizophrenia that is damaging his view of reality, which caused him to commit the murder.

The disease had sharpened my senses—not destroyed—not dulled them. Above all was the sense of hearing acute. I heard all things in the heaven and in the earth. I heard many things in hell. Schizophrenia is just one of the many mental disorders contributing to his illusions, there are many more. Severe Obsessive Compulsive Disorder OCD is also spotted in the short story as well. OCD is having a tendency towards excessive orderliness, perfectionism, and great attention to detail. And then, when I had made an opening sufficient for my head, I put in a dark lantern, all closed, closed, so that no light shone out, and then I thrust in my head.

You fancy me mad. Madmen know nothing. But you should have seen me. This shows that the narrator thinks he has a healthy mind but the reader is aware by the manner in which he describes the plan to murder the old man that he has anxiety. Sometimes it is up to you to seek help because sickness is a serious matter and one wrong decision made because of an illness can turn your whole world upside in a matter of seconds. Essay examples. Essay topics. Most popular essay topics on The tell-tale heart prepared by our experts:. The Tell-Tale Heart Analysis The short story The Tell-Tale Heart by Edgar Allan Poe, starts with the narrator muttering to himself and the audience. Insanity in the Tell-Tale Heart Edgar Allan Poe wrote the Gothic fiction short story The Tell-Tale Heart in at the age of thirty-four.

After several nights of breaking into the old man 's room the killer felt more secure about it. Since the eye is the one haunting the killer so killing the man with his eyes closed was simply not the right moment to do it. On the eight night the killer returns at midnight to break into the old man 's room. He follow the same procedure as he did in the past seven nights. The story is told from the first-person point of view. The point of view is key because readers only know what the narrator thinks. Because the story is only told from the point of the madman, it is hard to understand why he goes insane. He puts his head out very slowly and opens up the lantern so only a tiny beam of light hits his eye.

This brings apparent how cautious the killer was, how much care he put into opening the door, and how many precautions he put in place as to not wake the old man. This makes it seem like the killer is almost mocking the old man, because the killer knows how he passed the night. Once the idea of killing him came to mind that is all he thought about for day and night. He would then shine the light of the lantern just enough so that he could see that vulture eye of his. On the eighth night he was even more cautious than he had been before until his finger slipped while trying to open the lantern. Montresor in search of revenge on Fortunato, secretly and strategically plans his demise.

He lures him into the crypts and traps him down there by building a wall. This is just one example of a short story written by Poe that revolves around the themes of murder and torture. In this story, the narrator claims he is not mad, and even views his hypersensitivity as proof of his sanity, when in reality it is a symptom of his madness. As I said in the beginning, some authors have no experience with mental illness and therefor are unable to accurately describe the escalating process without seeming overly exaggerated or unrealistic.
